[at-l] Actual Katahdin Opening Dates

Baxter State Park is open to day hiking traditionaly on April 1st. The May
15th date is the traditional start of allowing camping in the park. The Hunt
Trail ( the AT ) out of Katahdin Stream Campground has been open to Baxter
Peak as early as late April and as late as July ( just last year it was late
June ). The BSP folks vigerously enforce the 'above tree line' closings, and
monitor hikers with spotting scopes and snitches at Abol Bridge Campground.
The AT stream crossings leaving the park can be deep wild torrents of frigid
snowmelt. And just an aside... The Abol trail is a steep scar of a rock slide
off Katahdin, dangerous all the time. That hiker was very lucky!
