[at-l] re: pur pioneer

solar bear:

i have a pioneer and a hiker. i like both a great deal. going solo, i
think the pioneer would be a perfectly viable option on a thruhike. like
you, i sneered at it when i first saw it, but when pur practically gave me
one for nothing, i decided to try it. i used it on a 50 mile hike from
dennis cove rd to damascus last trail days, and it worked great. ah, the
benefits of having your mind forced open! i used to have an msr, and what
i missed most in my hiker was the ability to screw right onto a nalgene.
the pioneer does this. the pioneer is also very fast. another positive is
that it is easy to get virtually all the water out of it, so you don't
carry any extra weight. the disks are relatively short lived, so i only
use it solo, not when hiking with other people. i think pur says they last
for 50 litres (did you say 12 gallons? that's about right isn't it). pur
does not recommend this, but you could clean the disks by thoroughly
rinsing in iodine-treated water. you need to make sure that all the bugs
trapped on one side of the disk are killed. probably get another 20L out
of each disk.

cheap, lightweight, easy to use, good company - can't get a better
combination.
