[at-l] North country winter equipment list

Help!

I'm going out this weekend to test out gear and techniques for winter
backpacking up in the Adirondacks. The weather in the High Peaks area
can vary tremendously... from cold rain to 30 below zero over a 24 hour
period. Above tree line the winds can be fierce, and in cold, windy,
weather any exposed skin quickly freezes. I belive that this is
comparable to winter conditions in the White Mountains, though I think
the cold may be more consistent there.

After reading and talking to friends with winter experience, I've come up
with the following tentative pack list for this weekend. It look (and
feels) very heavy to me. The total pack weight without food or water
(but including snowshoes and crampons) is 40 lbs. An extra 13 pounds of
carried gear (clothes, boots, etc) brings the grand total to a knee
breaking 53 pounds (again, before food and water). I don't have a tent
listed, as I'm sharing a friends. I'm carrying the food. To be fair, I
expect to be wearing the snowshoes most of the time, which brings the
pack weight down to 35 pounds (before food and water)

Here is the list. I'd appreciate any feedback I can get. Particularly
on weight reducing ideas!

Oh, and a few preemptive comments:

(1) the boots are monstrous, but they fit. I only hope that in my next
life I have smaller feet. Plastic double boots are heavy (and these are
heavier than many), but are required for some of the trips
(mountaineering) I'd like to take in the future. Many folks get by with
pack boots and instep crampons which are, admittedly, lighter that what
I've got. I've been walking around with ankle weights in an effort to
acclimate myself.

(2) the sleeping bag is rented. I'm not sure what I'll end up getting,
but it won't be this year.

(3) the trip I'm going on this year won't require an ice axe, so I
haven't included one. At this point, my training in the use of an ice
axe is minimal and I'd probably be a menace if I tried to use one.

(4) Since I'm the cook, I'm bringing two pots. Going to one pot seems
like a good bet in the future.

(5) Clothes worn while hiking include long underwear, full zip pants and
parka, hat, and possible the microfleece shirt. The fleece jacket stays
in an easily accessible place and gets pulled out at any stops. The
primaloft parka w/insulated hood and the fleece pants are for camp or
emergency bivouac use.

Thanks!
