[at-l] unprotected trail

Here's a piece from the Maine Appalachian Trail Club online news letter and
the URL or hotlink. Take a few minutes to read them.

For the past ten years, the Appalachian Trail Conference (ATC), the Maine
Appalachian Trail Club (MATC), and the National Park Service (NPS) have been
engaged in negotiations to secure a protective corridor in public ownership
surrounding a three-mile segment of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) across
Saddleback Mountain in western Maine. This segment represents the last
remaining unprotected stretch along the entire 260-mile section of the A.T. in
Maine - and one of the most spectacular - as well as the longest privately
held segment along the entire Trail.

Recently, Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine wrote the director
of the NPS urging him to accept an offer by Saddleback Ski Area to donate an
undefined 330-acre corridor surrounding the Trail on Saddleback Mountain.
Apparently, the senators' actions were motivated, in part, by the continuing
public-relations campaign being waged by ski-area representatives. But, their
actions also may have been motivated by the fact that they have heard from
very few people (other than official representatives of ATC and MATC) urging
adequate protection for the A.T. at Saddleback.
