Happy New year to All

I am back to work after 1 1/2 weeks vacation. The weather here is
crazy. Today it will reach the mid sixties, but on Jan 1 it reached
only 20F.

On Dec. 27th a small group of us hiked from Rte 74 to Rte 944 (Boiling
Springs Area, Cumberland Gap). The northeast had the Nor'easter that
day but the weather map showed that this area was going to be cloudy.
as you can imagine we had some snow, but the temperatures were above
freezing. The trail was muddy and we were the only ones on the trail.
When we reached the car on Rte 944 we drove it back to Boiling
springs. We then hike north to Rte 74. According to all the
information that we had this was three miles in distance. We covered
the distance in 40 minutes which means at the most the distance is 2
miles (we were averaging about 3 miles/hour). The KTA is complaining
about the missing miles on the AT and this appears to be were the
miles are missing.

On January 1 we took a small Group hiking at Jacobsburg State Park
which is 5 miles north of Easton PA. There was not any snow in
Easton, but the Park had several inches. A few more mile north was
Wind Gap and the mountains looked like they had a lot more. The trail
at Jacobsburg was in great shape, the ground was frozen and the snow
provided good traction. From the trail it was obvious that a number
of people had been hiking, but the trail was not icy. It was a very
positive experience for two of the boys who have never hiked (walked)
more than a mile at a time in their lives.

The weather this weekend appears to be very good for hiking.
Unfortunately I have to attend a meeting in Altoona, PA on Saturday.
Maybe I can get to the trails on Sunday.

Cheers,
