I find them to be essential in deep, unpacked snow.  Besides,
snowshoeing is a fun sport in itself!  I'm not sure where you live, but
here in the northeast, snowshoe rentals are pretty readily available at
REI, EMS, and some local outfitters (e.g., Lincon Guide Service).
