[at-l] when is too late to start a thru-hike?

hi, i want to start my thru-hike this upcoming summer in mid-late may.
is this too late a date to get the whole trail in before snow, inclement
weather, etc. hits?

i'd really appreciate some advice on this. i know a lot depends on my
pace, what kind of hiking shape i'm in, etc. i'm in good shape (and plan
to get even more into 'hiking' shape the closer i get to may).

so, what does everyone think or what have been your experiences?
