Ok, regarding iodine and allergy.

The problem with shellfish and iodine-related X-Ray contrast media is
well documented, and quite dangerous. There is _no_ allergy to elemental
iodine.

There is little reason to use a purifier in the US, a good filter, such
as the PUR Hiker is an excellent choice. The main concern with Iodine on
the trail is the taste and potential for excessive iodine accumulation,
especially in those with thyroid pathology. I discourage iodine, as I
believe it advantageous for thirsty people (who by definition are
dehydrated) need to drink early and often, rather than wait for the
iodine/chlorine to work - or to take a risk on parasitic hazards.
