That dollar a mile thing has nothing to do with gear, beer, or 2 night town
stays. I went about $2 a mile, don't let it concern you, I don't regret a
spending any of that. Many were able to do it for a dollar a mile, but
there thru-hike was different than mine (not worse, just different) make
sure you have 4000 because you can never be sure what you'll want to do.
