Re: [at-l] re: philosophical

someone mentioned that if he were a college student, he would try and do a
thesis about all these postings about the meaning of a thru-hike and
whether or not it is an inherently selfish endeavor. well, i am a college
student (who is planning to thru-hike this summer) and i AM doing a term
paper for an anthropology class about the cultural meaning of journeys of
solitude. i am comparing the vision-quest of native americans to different
solitudinal journeys that people take nowadays -- like thru-hikes. i would
be very interested in interviewing (via internet) someone of you
thru-hikers. i am planning to come up with a list of more specific
questions, but i'd also love to hear anyone else's thoughts on the subject
of these journeys and how they can be rites of passage, transformational,
what their meaning in the culture at large is, etc.

thanks!!
