Emily, you should check out Micheal Connick's Page.
He's been at this ultralite stuff a while.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mconnick/
And it's kind of a game here to post your pack contents
and invite people to Tuckerize it, point out what you've forgotten
and what you don't really need. Basically pick apart a pack.
Maybe you should try it?
It's a great exercise and the last time I posted mine, my pack
without food weighed over 35lbs. The great suggestions I got
started me thinking about need vs want. BTW...Extreme thanks
for the input gang!!!!!!
Here's my current list...please...do_not_be gentle.
Daypack................................................1lb 13oz
3/4 ultralit Thermarest....................................14oz
closed cell full lenght pad ................................4oz
Tarp..current one weighs ..............................2lb
Spaceblanket ground cloth/sit pad....yikes???..............10oz
Fleece Blanket.........................................2lb
Pillow....OK..go ahead and laugh.............................3oz
Nylon wind pants and rain anorak........................1lb 1oz
Bed socks, t-shirt, bra and two pr.panties,2 pr socks
lt.poly tops and bottoms in mesh stuff sack......2lb
Very small box of wetones,............................. 4oz
Plastic bag with foot powder, campsoap, mole skin,
tiny scissors, sunscreen, comb .....................6oz
Scout water filter, toothbrush for cleaning,
Coffee filters for pre-screening, water bag
A 6 in square of camptowel.,............................1lb 4oz
Cut down plastic soda bottle (pee cup) which protects
my petzl micro and several sheets of wax paper. ... 7oz
Trowel and Paper towel quarters.............................4oz
A Kraft cheese container with my gorp.......................6oz
First aid kit in heavy duty plastic bag.
Fairly complete.....................................7oz
Ace-type bangage................................... 2oz
Another bag with anti itch creme, 1 oz.bottle of
lotion, 1/2 oz bottle of face wash,
1/4 of a wash cloth, a few Q-tips,..................4oz
Repair kit,(minimal) with 2 extra batteries,
signal mirror.......................................4oz
ZZip stove, pot with pan/lid and extra aluminum lid ...2lb. 1oz
Doublewall insulated plastic 16oz mug loaded with
prepacks of instant coffee and sugar............... 6oz
That's under twenty lbs..
I'll probably try this out this weekend. I might even leave the stove
at home and go sans coffee and grits, but probably not. And if the
temps are predicted to be <60 degrees, I bring my polarfleece, hooded
jacket.
For food I have
smoked oysters,
cheese and salami
grapes and baby carrots
crackers
a tiny bit of maple syrup and squeeze margarine
instant cheesecake
corn pops
and for a first nite out treat...
smoked salmon, cream cheese on crackers with
shallots and capers and a squeeze of lemon...roughing it is hell
And of course..grits for breakfast...nirvana!!!!
I could loose another 1lb 4 oz if I switched to chem. treatement
for the water but this is_my_mental thing. As a fanactic fresh
water snorkeler, I know better than most just how many_visable_
creatures are in there deficating, urinating, and fornicating,
hatching and rotting.
And although I know the proper use of chemicals will make all
this stuff biologically inactive...it's still there. Yeeech.
People let out a giant ewwuuuu when they saw the pics of the
wolf or moose or loon doing toidy in the water, but if you put
the amount of mamalian/bird dodo that ends up in the streams
up against the mass of the same type of material created by
what lives in the streams, I bet we're talking a hundred fold.
So I can't see me giving up on filtering, but I will switch to a
lighter filter.
Why two sleep pads? The thin thermarest doesn't quite do it..my hipbones
poke thru. And the total of the two is still less than
a plusher thermarest.
On the AT, I can cut 3oz from the first aid kit
And I'm starting to re-evaluate my petzl<<<sigh>>
I also wear a belly bag which contains
An emergency disposable poncho, and mylar blanket.
Water pills and 2-1Qt ziplocks
Lighter and parachute cord
.5ml drop cloth
1/2 oz eye wash bottle of tooth polish and brush
Papertowel pieces in little plastic bags..for peeing
Chap stick
12% pepper type spray, Buck Lite knife,
I haven't weighed this and i won't. I don't want to know yet.
But I wear this thing whenever I enter the woods..even for a mile stroll
so it's a part of me and I'm used to it. But on the AT, I can cut
alot from this. More people....safer trail than I usually hike.
OK..start picking
