[at-l] ultralight packs

http://www.kelty.com/WhiteCloud.html

is the url for the smaller of kelty's lightweight internal frame packs,
the cloth is spectra, a very light very strong fabric (I saw one
once and if I recall it felt like a thick tyvek (sp?)), that is used in
some climbing slings b/c it is very strong for the weight.

They are larger in capacity (reg: 3655-4050) than most ultralight hikers
want to go, they were mainly designed for mountaineering, and
comparatively light, I suppose (reg: 3lb 1 oz)
It might be something to think about if you want a compromise.

I have not looked a packs reecently, but when I was last, the smaller
lighter packs tended to have fixed suspensions, that is non adjustable
sewn in hipbelt and shoulder straps, etc. You would just get the size
pack that fit you the best. If you are planning on changing body
proportions over the course of a long trip, and I suppose the people that
have thru-hiked can comment on this more, remember that a fixed suspension
pack can't change with you (altho torso length is the biggest factor, and
I would be impressed if you were planning on changing your torso length
significantly). I assume that more of the packs now have hipbelts, etc
that can be removed, but it is still something to consider before getting
a small pack.

OK - now back to lrurking, really!
