The stream bottoms in Maine are quite slippery and having something on your
feet with some traction is very helpful.  I did it in Teva knockoff's
and my wife did it in the pull-on beach/surf shoes.  Both work.  I think
hers are lighter.  Both have the advantage of not absorbing any
significant amount of water and hence becoming heavier until they dry
out, as happens if you just wade it in your hiking boots as some do.
