[at-l] All the Way's Journal ( 5/11-5/18)

Hi Everybody...
Jan

Sunday 5/11 Chestnut Knob Shelter to Ridge, about 8 miles past Jenkins
Shelter 17.8 miles

Beautiful, Interesting Day... Cool and windy this morning. Had a nice
ridge walk down through Rhododendron and hardwoods. I spent much of the
afternoon rock hopping across Little Wolf Creek. When I got to Route
615 I met six good 'ol boys drinkin beer and smokin reefer out of two
pick up trucks. They said that I was the only hiker that would drink a
beer with them - most of the rest bush-wacked around them. So I drank
two! I decided to leave when the conversation turned to, "Well, are we
gonna shoot 'fore it gets dark?" Discretion is the better part of
valor.

I got to a nice campsite by the creek but, there were several people
there(hikers). I decided to move on up the ridge for better views and
some solitude. I got both! ( It would have been a shame to waste those
good carbohydrates from the beer), the hiking was good.

Life is good...All the Way

Monday 5/12 On Ridge past Jenkins to Jenny Knob Shelter 16.1 miles

Easy Goin' In Good Sun Today! Ridge walking at about 3,000 feet in
elevation...had some equipment problems today. The shoulder strap on my
North Face pack fell apart. It was a good thing that I'm almost out of
food. (That's another problem). Cookin' lent me his awl so I could try
to piece it together to get to Pearisburg. I'll be calling TNF very
soon!

My appetite is insatiable. I left Damascua 8 days ago with over 35lbs.
of food and it is almost gone... minor resupply tomorrow. I must replan
any scheduled maildrops over seven or eight days... will be seeing
Janice on Friday! Wooohooo!!!

Here tonote with Pan and Snowshoe.
White blazes... All the Way.

Tuesday 5/13 Jenny Knob Shelter to Wapiti Shelter 13.6 miles

Excellent Day! My birthday- turned 40...never thought that I would live
this long, but glad that I did...very good to have a B-day on the trail.

Easy hiking, gentle grades and good footing... muscles are screaming at
me any way...need a day or two off- coming up this weekend in
Pearisburg.

Did a minor (very minor - they don't take credit cards and I was short
on cash), resupply at Trent's Store. I grabbed a couple of beers,
bread, jelly, Snickers, and grits.

...I flushed a turkey (very close) today. Also, I saw many Trout in the
streams and pond... wish I had my fly rod or a DuPont lure.

...got to Wapati Shelter and found some apples; a birthday gift from
Cookin' and Shadow...missed all of the rain today. It stopped 20
minutes before I left Jenny Knob and started again 5 minutes after I got
in at Wapati.
Life is good. All the Way

Wednesday 5/14 Wapati Shelter to Doc's Knob Shelter 8.4 miles

Early Sunshine Gave Way To Cold Rain... rocky section of trail with
slippery footing. I fell due to the wet rocks and broken pack. Good
short day .Short day into Pearisburg tomorrow...then three days off.
Sorry about the penmanship, worse than usual- fingers are very cold.
The rain is letting up, gotta go fetch water. Life is good...
All the Way

Thursday 5/15 Doc's Knob Shelter to Pearisburg, VA 7.8 miles

Dry Morning After A Very Rainy Night... had some beautiful lightening
and thunder... woke up with much pain in my right knee and hip. I
slipped on tha rocks yesterday- wet and off balance 'cause of my broken
pack. I hope the North Face does right.

...downhills are still good, but ups are painful. Good time for a few
days off. Jan and the kids are coming tomorrow!

The Holy Family Hostel provides great accomodations. Here with Pan,
Cookin', Shadow, Lars, Moosette, and Backrest with Boomer.
