My first white blaze on the AT came on top of Springer last year at the
beginning of my thru-hike. I had never backpacked more than three days
before my thru-hike. I was so unprepared at the start that I didn't have
a pen to sign the register at the beginning of the approach trail. So I
bought a cheap pen on the way up at the gift store at the Visitor's
Center at Amicalola Falls State Park. I didn't even make it to Springer
that first day....rained turned to snow, and I was in my sleeping bag at
Black Gap Shelter by mid afternoon. Woke up with several inches of snow
on my sleeping bag. When I made it up to Springer, I found the "hidden"
register, and was ready to sign it to make it official. Then I
discovered that my cheap pen had frozen up or just didn't work. I kind
of hung around until another hiker showed up, but his pen was didn't
work either. Then I dejectedly walked down the trail past the first
white blazes wondering whether my thru hike would "count." I got over
that kind of silliness in a big hurry :-)
