I noticed an ad in this month's AMC Outdoors (their member magazine) for
last-minute reservations for the huts.  The phone number is
1-800-262-4455 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.  This number can be used for
reservations "5 or fewer days in advance of your visit."  This might be
helpful to thru-hikers.
