I just came back from Hiking Mt. Moosilauke. It is in the Western part of
the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We followed the AT from Glencliff over
the summit and got off the trail in Kinsman Notch (NH rt 112). We
encountered snow about 3/4 of the way to the summit. The summit was bare but
below treeline was icy and wet. The north east decent was worse. There was
between 4 and 5 feet of snow in places from just below tree line until one
mile from the trail head. I noticed at one point that the white blazes we at
my ankles. Everyonce in awhile my foot would break through the snow
sometimes up past my knees. There was flowing ice water under the snow that
filled my boots. It was a great hike but it took a lot longer than I was
expecting. Apparently Mount Washington received over 90 inches of snow in
May - a record for May - and expects to have some skiing still in July.
Right now there is over 60 feet of snow in Tuckerman Ravine. It will be
longer than two weeks before the snow is gone. Also, the snow gets worse the
further north you go on the trail.
