There was a book written about this called "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer.
Good read.

I think anyone who was/is disgusted at modern society felt like Chris
McCandless at one point or another. There is a passage in this book that
has a letter McCadndless wrote to his friend, in this letter there is a
line that states:
" The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence
there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for
each day to have a new and different sun."

I think this expresses many, if not all, of our feeling towards the
outdoors.

McCandless' "sin" was to be naive and unprepared for the adventure. Did the
20/20 story mention however that this person more or less survived on his
working odd jobs? Paddling to Mexico? Just read the book. I do not think
the 20/20 story (Which I did not see) did McCandless justice...
