KTA SPONSORS TRAIL CREW IN 1997

Attention, Pennsylvania Hikers! Mark your calendars, set aside your
favorite work clothes and spread the word. KTA's extended trail care
project begins this summer. Come join us and volunteer some time to
give back to Pennsylvania's hiking trails.

Plans for the extended trail care project (as it's being called) were
first announced in the Fall of 1996. The project will supplement,
rather than replace, the regular weekend trail care projects. It will
focus on trails that require more work than the weekend crews can
accomplish. Trails chosen for 1997 are listed below, along with
projected work dates and trail sections.

DATES FOR EXTENDED TRAILCARE :

June 12-16 --- Donut Hole Trail ---- Sproul St. Forest, (N. Central
PA)

The Donut Hole Trail is 55 miles long and traverses the northern part
of the Sproul State Forest. Although both ends of this trail are
readily accessible froom PA Route 120, the trail provides hikers with
a sense of remoteness and solitude. Workers should arrive by 5pm on
Wednesday, June 11, for dinner and an orientation session. The actual
trail work begins on Thursday morning.

During this project, we will build a new portion of the trail to
connect its western end to the Bucktail Path and the Quehanna Trail
System.

The workers will stay in a nearby farm house. You can spend the night
in the house or set up a tent on the grounds. KTA covers the cost for
housing and meals.

June 19-23 --- Gerard Trail System --- Oil Creek St. Park, Venango Co.
(Western PA)

The Gerard Trail System is a 36 mile circuit Trail with five
connecting trails in Oil Creek State Park. The Trail System is on both
sides of Oil Creek. The trail has waterfalls, scenic vistas, and
historic remmants of oil boom days.

The trailwork will improve the existing trail system, by relocating
parts of the trail, clearing a vista, reroofing a shelter, and general
trail work.

Volunteers will stay at a campsite or indoor housing(we are currently
arranging for housing and will have information by April). Workers
should arrive by 5 pm Wednesday for dinner and orientation. KTA will
be covering the cost of meals and housing.

June 26-30 --- Mid-State Trail --- State Game Land 73, Bedford Co. (S.
Central PA)

The Mid -State Trail runs contiguously for 189 miles in central
Pennsylvania, beginning at the West Rim Trail in Pine Creek Gorge.
While its rocky ridges and thick forests give a sense of remoteness,
it is readily accessibe from many roads.

During this project, we will clear part of a new southern extension
that will eventually make the Mid-State Trail the longest trail in
Pennsylvania.

Volunteers will stay at a campsite or indoor housing (more information
will be known by April). Volunteers should arrive by 5pm on Wednesday
for dinner and orientation. KTA will be covering the cost for meals
and housing.

The work week for each trail will last from Thursday through Monday.
Volunteers will have the option of working for one or more weeks,
depending on preferences and schedules. KTA will provide meals and
housing at campsites or cabins (subject to availability). We will
supply tools, including chain saws, hand saws, loppers, paint and work
gloves. All volunteers will be covered by medical insurance through
Nationwide Insurance.

Please consider helping KTA be a vital force in the maintenance and
construction of the many trails in Pennsylvania. If this project is
successful, it could lead to similar future extended trailcare weeks.
It is only through this and other volunteer trailcare projects that
Pennsylvania can continue to one of the best hiking states in the
East.
