[at-l] do-it-yourself freeze drying

A friend at the local physics department says you can prepare your own
freeze-dried food, using a vacuum pump, glass bell-jar, and a heat lamp:

Place the food in a single layer inside the bell jar, and pump out the air,
which causes the moisture in the food to evaporate. Shine the heat lamp on
the food during the process. The water evaporates so fast it forms frost
on the surface of the food; the heat dissipates the ice. The food should
have a thin cross-section.

Has anyone here tried that process?
