Sodium hypochlorite in it's pure form is a powder but is generally
available in liquid.  clorox is approx a 6% solution.  Pool shock is
14% so you only have to carry about half as much.  Even higher 
concentrations are available for industrial use but one drop will
dissolve your clothes and turn your hair white.

Years ago I used a water purifying tablet that was chlorine based
