[at-l] re: new boots for me

will -

using one of those paste-type waterproofers like nikwax or snoseal will
render the gortex as a useless membrane that you overpaid for. i don't
believe gortex in boots works worth a bucket of beans and a rope, but the
idea is the membrane is the waterproof part, the leather is not. if you
snoseal the leather, then there is no need for the gortex, except that
maybe the boot will be *more* waterproof. it will no longer be breathable,
but i sense that was not a concern of yours.

you might try silicone waterproofing - either in a liquid form that you
brush on, or in spray form. this is what is recommended for my one-sports,
also nubuck leather. i think the silicone *is* breathable, and may work
better with the gortex liner.

either way, on a thruhike, your boots will get soaked and your feet will
squish at least 5 times, probably much more. i don't know anyone that has
solved this.
