Re: [at-l] More on Peggy

Working at a homeless shelter, I see cases of varying degrees of mental
illness on a daily basis. It was estimated that on a given night, up to 25%
or more of our residents may have a major mental illness (of course this
fluctuates daily, and varies widely). I'm no expert (yeah, I'm putting that
molecular biology degree to good use...) but it seems to me that some folk
who would be considered crazy, looney, insane, etc just function differently
than "us", and given a more suitable environment, each could function
perfectly well. Every person that I've met, mentally ill or not, has
provided some insight into my own condition and station in life. We can all
learn from each other. It seems that, as long as Peggy and the Artist aren't
a threat to themselves or others, that they may have found a place in which
they can function on their own levels without the rest of society imposing
limits on them. Treated with respect and courtesy, I'm sure they'd each have
something to offer. We're all human after all...

Sorry to wax on...

I'd kind of like to meet these folks. I've been told more than once in the
past few months that I've been crazy, usually when discussing my upcoming
thru-hike. ;-)
