RE: [at-l] dehydrator recipe

You don't need to be a great cook to use a dehydrator. For great spaghetti sauce go to Price Costco or Sam's Club and get #10 cans of sauce (plain or Ragu) and brown up some hamburger, season to taste. Lay it out on the wet liner inserts. We've also done chili but you need to water it down a little, otherwise it takes longer to dry.

For vegetables we purchase frozen vegetables in large packages and spread them out (still frozen) and dry them. It works great and little preparation. Fresh vegetables are also good, just not as easy to find these days. In addition to jerky, we've dried canned tuna for casseroles. We tried chicken with no luck, although we haven't tried canned chicken yet.

We've dried canned bean (kidney, black, etc.). The skins split and we're not sure what recipes to use them in.

I found a number of good sites on the net for drying:

An excellent book on backing packing food with a section on drying is The Hungry Hiker's Book of Good Cooking by Gretechen McHugh. We picked it up from REI.
