John -
Good story. And I like your conclusions.
And I don't want to start the "U" thing again either,
but I do want to point out that today's pct-l contains a post by
one of last years PCT thruhikers pointing out that he used an
umbrella in the desert and in Washington.
I also went looking for Alan Julliard's reference to the Umbrella Lady
because Ginny and I know Leonard and Laurie Adkins - not as well as
we'd like, but we've met them at the Gathering several times. The
article Alan was referring to was in the April 94 issue of Backpacker.
There's a picture of Leonard and Laurie, complete with umbrella - and
rain gear - on page 62 in connection with the article on "Radical
Repeaters" - or as I put it (out of envy, maybe?) - repeat offenders.
For copies of the Lewis and Calark journals check the used book stores.
I saw a copy in one recently although I can't remember where at the
moment. And that's where I got mine.
Walk softly,
Jim
