but not necessarily occurring in Virginia.
* Springer Fever, a debilitating but as yet medically undiagnosed
condition directly linked to early spring. Symptoms include backpacking
fantasys, dreams about backpacking, restlessness, an inability to
concentrate on anything other than backpacking, and a constant tendancy
to wander south toward Springer and/or calculate costs of
bus/plane/train tickets to Georgia.
* Temporary Insanity (ie SPARROWHAWK when entering Andover, Maine)
* Permanant Insanity (ie WARD LEONARD)
* Deviation from cultural norms (level of deviation is porportional to
length of time spent hiking, and long-term hiking has been known to lead
to an inability to readjust to "THE REAL WORLD")

If you find yourself suffering from any or all of the above, it is
advised that you join ATAA (Appalachian Trail Adicts Anonomous) or call
the 24 hour help line at 1-800-HIKENOW for emergeny counselling.

The seriousness of this addiction is too frequently underestimated, seek
