Hi Peter,
You wrote

Just wanted to say that as a bystander, and someone who has always
admired Jim Owen's posts, I appreciated your apology on 2/20 and the
humor in your post. My understanding of your post is that you based your
desire to thru hike on the knowledge that you had the will and
perserverence to do it, and, perhaps, you saw it as a way of kind of
making up for being last chosen for games. Maybe the thru hike is a way
for you to say, "My abilities are as worthwhile as your abilities."
You wrote, I

So I can understand how it would come as a major blow to perceive (and I
emphasize "perceive") people as saying your strengths don't count and
instead you need to have the very skills that kept you from being chosen
for those other things. I would guess that you reacted to that perceived
blow rather than to what I thought Jim was saying.
Anyway, it's over and done. The tone of your apology says to me you're a
pretty good guy, and I wish you all the best on the trail.
