another good book is 'Eight Bullets' by Claudia Brenner.  she was wounded
and her partner killed near birch run shelters in PA, ironically near "dead
woman's road."

now that i think about it, i slept at all the "famous murder shelters" on
my thruhike:  Wapiti (rebuilt), Thelma Marks, and Birch Run.
