[at-l] Fear and Loathing on the AT

Appendix B "Fear and Loathing on the AT"

The Trail Community Mourns Deng Xiaoping

Erwin, TN (AP)

It was learned today that Deng Xiaoping as a young 50 year old had
in fact thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail with his good friend Earl Shaffer.
Earl confirmed recently that the title of his book "Walking with Spring" was
actually meant to be "Walking with Deng" but was rejected by conservative
ATC watchdogs in 1983.

Deng's many references to "The Long March" were actually incorrectly
translated from the chinese dialect by first year intern Sherman P. "Slim"
Crabtree and actually referred to "The Long Cruise" a phrase Earl and "The
Dungman" as he was affectionally called, used to describe their long hike.

The picture of Earl atop Katahdin on the final page of Earl's book
was actually snapped by "Dungman" with his trusty Kodak Brownie camera
-which Earl can be seen holding on page 85 of his book.

The Biddle brothers pictured on page 128 were actually CIA
operatives who had shadowed Earl and the Dungman for most of the trail.

Certainly the Biddles could not let Xiaoping be the first to
thru-hike the AT. The Nation was still mourning the losses of WWII and the
Biddle brothers were hell bent on not letting "an asian" accomplish this
feat. So began the great coverup.

Earlier references to "redneck" are now thought not to be of
sharecroppers or whiskey runners who often worked for long hours in the sun,
but were actually early references to the Dungman who frequented many of the
towns in the Southern Appalachias in search of replacement film, whiskey,
women and tea - not particularly in that order.

Consequently, if you are becoming bored with all of the news of Deng
Xiaoping's recent death, remember this post, get a copy of Schaffer's
"Walking With Spring" and smile for as Earl would often say,

"When Deng smiled we all smiled" "That Dungman Deng"
