[at-l] Re: Mt. Oglethorpe

In a message dated 97-02-19, you write:

<< Mt Oglethorpe, in Georgia, was once the starting point of the AT. I seem
to remember reading somewhere that it is now in private hands and cannot be
hiked without "trespassing". Just wondering if you can confirm that info. (I
probably got it wrong, perhaps it's the land connecting Oglethorpe to the
present AT that is now in private ownership.)>>

Mount Oglethorpe is easy to find and visit. The marble spire that marked the
summit when Earl Shaffer started his "Long Cruise" to Katahdin in 1948 is
still there. The problem is you can drive there, but the only way to hike it
is by following the gravel road. You can't go through the woods the old AT
traversed without going through a housing development.

Oglethorpe is just south of GA 136 west of Amicalola. It is visible from the
highway because of the FAA towers on top. You get to it by following the
gravel (it supposed to be paved soon and may be by now for part of its route)
Monument Road, which dead ends at the summit.

Info on when and how Springer became the southern terminus of the AT is in an
article on Springer Mountain we have online at

appeared in the Appalachian Trailway News.
