Hi Dan,
I like your thoughts on the bivy sack. My friend just bought a Bibler and I
plan on borrowing it to test it out before buying one myself. I am
clastrophobic, so it makes sense to try it out before buying one myself.
Have you ever tried a umbrella while backpacking? It does offer the
protection when packing gear away or taking it out on the trail. Keeps the
rain off you while hiking or resting. Yes I will get wet with or without
rain gear, but I don't miss the water splashing off my face while I hike or
rest with my umbrella. I purchased a standard 42" umbrella at Wal-Mart for
$8 and it weighs 14 ounces.
Take care,
John
