[at-l] Re: Rainbow Springs deja vu
Totally agree with Sleeper. 1994 was a notorious year for lots of bitching
about services from hikers who had already "been there, done that."
However, once you arrived at the hostel, restaurant, etc everything was
just groovy. Rainbow Springs was fine, the DMZ was fun, Keith Shaw didn't
try to take too much of our money. Think the problem derives from hikers
reading trail guides, building up grand impressions, and then being
flabbergasted that these are BUSINESSES that also happen to be in a
relatively economically depressed area of the country. I'd defy anyone to
cater to several thousand people each year who are all bent on getting by
with the quintessential yogi. My hiking partner and I tried to approach
each situation with an attitude of gratefulness that these people would
even ALLOW our smelly bodies to mingle with their regular customers!
Take all Trail info with a grain of salt; if you get there and you feel
like someone is rude or gouging you on prices, you can always leave. The
beauty of the Trail is you usually always have choices.
