[at-l] Bad Advice

I was wondering if any other thru-hikers had received
any bad advice on their hike that proved to be totally
wrong. Mainly someone else's perception of a place
or the way they were treated by locals they met.
To clarify: In 94 I was warned about Rainbow Springs
Campground from some fellow hikers heading back to
the trail. We were told how the place was a rip off and
how rude the owners were. Now I never totally believe
something when I have only heard one side of a story.
But no matter how hard I tried to not prejudge, I arrived
expecting the worst.. The prices were a bit higher but not
so much that they were going to get rich. I don't think the
fact that I bought enough cokes, chili, or pizzas for three
normal people had any effect on their attitude towards us.
While they didn't bow to our every whim, we were treated
courteously and enjoyed our stay.
And now - the other side of the story. We learned that
the previous group gathered in the parking lot then would
send one person in to negotiate for services and prices.
Back to the parking lot then another attempt for a special
deal. They finally stomped off feeling they hadn't gotten the
respect mighty thru-hikers deserved.
It has been said here many times before - hiker etiquette.
It's all about respect. Give it to others, they will give it back
to you.
  Any other similar experiences?
