I can appreciate your anxiety, but let me assure you that your son will be
among
the best people in the States.  I wish that all international summit meetings
were
conducted on the trail, I think they would be far more successful.  Other 
respondents here will provide details about email locations (and there are
some),
but don't fear that you have spawned an idiot, I think all thru hikers feel
that way
at one time or another.

Think instead about how your son will be changed after he completes hiking
the
AT.  An idiot he will no longer be and you will be proud of his
accomplishment.
