Good research project.  How much of the AT passes through what was
originally public land?  Is one-third accurate?  Theoretically, now
two-thirds could be on the side of the highway.  Not fun!  How much of the
two-thirds was obtained by e.d?  I would expect very little.  Any firm data
out there?
