What is DMZ?  DMZ = Demilitarized Zone.  Usually a wide strip of land
between two waring factions, e.g. between north and south Korea.

In general you never want to be in a DMZ.

As applied to the AT, there have occational been areas of the trail
that have been informally referred to as DMZs because of being
"problem" areas where "rednecks" hang out or other possible threats to
safety. There is no official designation of such zones so take them
for what they are worth (almost nothing, other than you might take
a few more precautions in areas where there have been recent problems.)
Such areas tend to move around rapidly. This week a problem - next week
somewhere else.
