Felix,

This is from poor memory but -

I think the murders occured at the old Wapiti Shelter which sat on the 
bank directly above the forest road (i.e. you could watch traffic from 
your sleeping bag)  The new Wapiti is north of this location and was 
constructed at the time the At was re-routed (the old At climb the 
hill directly behind the old shelter).

You might also enjoy a book called "Murders on the Appalachian Trail."
