JACOB southbound in VA

Today, Saturday 19 Oct 96, while setting up an Aid Station for the
Mountain Masochist 50 Mile Trail Run (145 runners ran the fire roads,
not the AT) at Salt Log Gap, northern Amherst County, Virginia, I was
approched by thru-hiker Chris Hunter ("JACOB") about all the activity.
He said he had started at Harpers Ferry and was headed for Damascus. The
weather the night before he had been "rain, sleet, hail, snow and wind".
He hoped the weather wouldn't cut his schedule short.

He wanted to say hello to "SHOOTER" if anyone runs into him (who should
now be in Pennsylvania, north bound.)

"JACOB" said he had an offer (ride) to go to the GATHERING, but made a
mistake not accepting. He talked of wanting to do the whole trail,
maybe next year.

This race has been run for about 13 years , starting at the James River
Visitor Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway at 6:30 AM and finishing at
Montebello, VA within a 12 hour limit.

Some get there kicks a different way.

I am not a hiker, rather an interested reader of this list.
