Tents vs. tarps

I've section-hiked quite a bit of the AT (VT to central VA). I'm
probably the world's laziest backpacker and the only shelter I've ever
carried are two tarps (I just don't like the hassle of setting up a
tent--although I realize with some models the hassle is more perceived
than real :-)). I use one as a ground tarp and slept under the
stars most nights, and on stormy nights I rigged up the other tarp as
cover. There were a couple of nights when I got a little damp, and some
nights when the bugs were a bit annoying, but overall I've never really
felt the need for a tent (I've never winter-hiked, however). Just
wondering what other people's thoughts were...
