Just a point of information - there is virtually no chance of being
fined by the rangers. The only regular patrols are done by the SMHC
Ridgerunner & they don't (can't?) take that heavy-handed an approach.
Also, there's a recognition by the NPS that the three/shelter slack in
the reservation system left for thruhikers is wholly inadequate & that
the shelters will be overfull, especially weekends. Two suggestions -
don't overnight w/o a reservation (except thruhikers) & it you have a
tent, be willing to make room for those who don't (but make sure to keep
your food in the shelter - the bears do come around).
