thanks for your response. i've received a lot of info from another
thru-hiker who's hiked with her dog.

i bought nikki (my dog) a new pack that has padding where the buckles
come together, so i hope that takes care of the abrasion problem i've
had before.

sounds like you had a great time with your dogs.
