Although, I have yet to hike the entire AT, I have met many thru hikers.  
For those unexpected hotel visits, extra movies, unexpected extra gear 
along the way, movies, beer etc. I would have b/w $2500-$2700 ready to 
dib into while on the trail.  I don't know your maintenance level, but 
it's better to have too much than not enough.  I've also heard that $1 
per mile is what is recommended (2155 I think).  I tend to shoot a little 
bit higher for the unexpected.
