Jim,
  Yeah, Greg and I talked a little bit about lightning in Irwin after
my experience on Big Bald.  One of the odd things was that  it seemed
most of the thunderstorms (except Big Bald) all happened between 10-12noon,
not in the afternoon.  Another hiker (Toggosi) mentioned being in Bastian,
and the storm was so bad the VA Highway Dept came out with snowplows
to clear the roads from all the hail that came down.  Maybe '94 was
a bad storm year for some reason..
