This is to reassure Sharon, who is afraid of heights on the AT:
They don't call it the Green Tunnel for nothing! Most of the time the
only way you know you are up high is what you feel in your legs. Every
once in a while there is a little side trip to a cliff, but you don't have
to go right to the edge. :-)
More to the point, if you start at Springer Mountain, you will have
plenty of safe-feeling views (vistas from fairly small openings
in the trees or, on Tray Mtn., for instance, from more open
but pretty wide spots), and I bet you will be sensitized by the trail
itself. There will be long stretches of forest between these
views.
