Some of the larger snows we've seen have occured in March here in Virginia.
Weatherwise, a late March start might be more desirable, both from a
physical and mental standpoint.  (Sorry, my eyes scanned over the March 1st
date you cited in your original post.  Most through-hikers start around the
end of March as previously mentioned.)
