Hi,
  When I hiked last year, I stayed at Wapiti shelter.  I didn't see any
memorial information about the two hikers, but I knew about the area's 
history from reading "Murder on the Appalachian Trail".  It certainly is
a lovely area leading up to the shelter;  there is a large pond about 500
yards before you get to the shelter.  The shelter is quite nice also, it
seemed it was made out of split logs.  A somewhat typical AT shelter, maybe
a little cleaner looking.  Most of the hikers did not know what had 
happened in the area until I told them the story.
