But heck, who are we fooling. These people plan to develop it all and
simply label it important national economy needs.
Those who are engaged in making money for themselves and their investors
have brains focused on that end. Those who seek to protect the views and
atmosphere of wilderness must meet the challenges of those who would profit from
impinging on virgin (or seeming virgin) territory. Money talks and people
listen to that language. Who will speak the language of peace, relaxation,
discovery, accomplished miles of a wild walk, etc., and convince those in power
that the ability to escape for a day, week, or season is worthwhile?
The ATC needs to join with other organizations to make a message that is
clear and that appeals to those values that are found in the woods. There is an
industry that makes financial gain by selling its products to hikers,
campers, hunters, those that fish, and others who enjoy recreational pursuits in
the woods. That industry needs to speak to the issues and make the voice of
those who advocate for the AT and other parkland more powerful than it is.
