[at-l] Bad news

About six months ago on a Friday my son was visiting a friend of his, Woody, who was terminal. Neither my son nor Woody were hikers. Yet Woody mentioned that he would like to go to the top of a nearby mountain. His words were "I am going to start enjoying life". My son called some of their mutual friends and they carried him to the top of the mountain by car the next morning, Saturday. My son said Woody thoroughly enjoyed it. Woody, at fifty, died just after the noon hour on Sunday the next day. Although, not a hiker he seemed to sense where he needed to go to 'start enjoying life'.

When I think I don't have time to go hiking I try to remember Woody's words, "I am going to start enjoying life". Sly is right. The only time to enjoy life is while we have it. We never know when our last hike will be.

Holy shit. How old was he? Close to my age I imagine. One of the reasons I
don't look too far into the future and try to enjoy life while I'm still
living...
