[at-l] Tell me...what do you think?

Supported hikes have been a part of the AT for quite a while now. It's not what I chose, I wouldn't encourage it, but others with significant mileage under their belts have opted for it. If Warren Doyle is a laughingstock of the AT, for example, he is less likely to be so for his supported hikes than he is for other actions.

getting more and more disconnected from fundamental and enriching human
activities, this is the last straw. Our day-to-day environment is so safe,
so predictable, so mediated...going to the woods is our last refuge in many
ways (and even that is threatened by encroaching 'civilization').
The weight of my pack fills me with joy--joy knowing that everything I need
is with me, my home is wherever I am, and I am independent to a certain
extent. Mind you, I haven't yet slogged that "joyous" load over the full
2,100 miles...ask me what I think next year after I attempt a thru-hike! I
think, though, that the joy will still be there.
I predict that whomever uses this service may end up being the laughing
stock of AT. The AT stands for many things and, above all, it is a
spontaneous and egalitarian territory. Throwing down big money for the
Disney version of a thru-hike is a terrible compromise of one of the few
major authentic experiences a person can have in this country.
