I was watching an Anhinga swimming in a roadside ditch hunting minnows
when to both our surprises a 5.5 foot alligator surfaced right underneath it.
The Anhinga should have been a goner because it was right next to the gator's mouth. I think gators get sluggish in winter so the gator made a retarded move towards it with mouth agape. The Anhinga went to the shore and flapped its water-logged wings in desperate flight while running away. The gator missed its chance.

What was more surprising was how the Anhinga went about 20 feet away
and continued hunting for minnows. I guess nearly being ripped to shreds is just a job hazard in the nature world.

All right in the neighborhood. From carol1944 at brmemc.net Wed Feb 1 19:41:21 2006

ROFLM(Nose)O!!

Good one.

When I'm out driving and need to 'find a tree' that's my first reaction -- not the rest stop, not the next exit for a fastfood restroom, I'm actually looking for a tree to use.

Only ONCE have I succumbed (and it was pitch black, so I was undetected).

At one point - the morning being cool and my nose running - without missing a beat, I automatically brought my finger up to the clearer nostril and blew a snot rocket.
It was a perfect one too, deeply clearing and satisfying.
And a totally unconscious gesture, right in the midle of the developed lake road. A lady coming toward us walking a little white dog looked startled. And that's when I saw myself through, like Adam grabbing a fig leaf.

I haven't done that for two years! It was such a perfectly natural gesture.
  I blame the company.
